Increasing speed and improved maths skills with more classwork!

My daughter keeps telling me how fast time passes in Tenby, which is in line with the saying “time passes fast, when you are having a good time”. She has already been in TIS 3 weeks now, and another 4 weeks to go and they are off for one week holiday, which I think is really good, because they get a proper break rather than just an extended weekend at most, which she was used to in her old school.

My daughter is also very pleased with how she has improved her maths skills already after such a short time in TIS. She doesn’t hide the fact that in Tenby they have a lot of work to do, but she doesn’t mind because the difference is that they don’t get homework, but classwork, which they should try to finish in class, and if they don’t, they can do it at break time or during the lunch break, as they have 1/2 hour break at 10 am and one hour break for lunch at 12 pm. Because they practice multiplication and divisions a lot, and the teacher is expecting them to complete their exercises as fast as they can, my daughter is trying harder and is therefore getting faster at maths and has improved her time tables quite a bit. The wisdom ‘practice makes perfect’ is so true!

If they manage to finish their classwork during the lessons, at break time, they are allowed to play or go to the library or even go on the Internet from the computers available to the students in the ICT lab, which is supervised by a teacher.

I think this is a fantastic system, as the children are given the freedom to choose, how they want to organise themselves. If they want to enjoy themselves either during break time or at home after school, they must finish their class work fast, which is a way to motivate them to get it done, so they have time to play or work on the computer, read a book or do sports, whatever their interests are.
