My daughter is taking Debating Club as her CCA on Mondays and she really likes it. She is the only primary student attending the class, but she doesn’t mind, because she is having fun together with the secondary students. The teacher is very enthusiastic, kind and helpful and takes a genuine interest in the students and what the students have to say, making my daughter even more interested in the class, as she feels excited and appreciated.
Basically the class is about learning to express agreement and disagreement on various topics. As a start they were requested to tell why they chose the debating club as their CCA, which is a good way to teach them to think about their reasons and to respond on the spot.
Next they were given different topics and each and everyone of them had to express what they thought about the given topic for instance “I agree that bananas are healthy because they contain fibers” and another student would say “I disagree that bananas are healthy because they contain sugar”. And so it carries on with different topics. In the beginning they are probably starting with some simple topics and moving on to more complex debating as the students become more capable and proficient.
Learning how to express ourselves properly will improve our confidence, which is the reason why many of the students are taking the class, to improve their confidence in speaking up and express their opinions, agreements and disagreements in proper ways.
I will ask my daughter from time to time about the topics in the debating club and report if there is something interesting to tell.
